  It is old news that language can make us form different and false opinions about the world. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is well known in both linguistics and philosophy, and in the same vein Bertrand Russell has argued that the Aristotelian subject-predicate logic mislead some famous philosophers into ontological monism. Barry Smith has made a similar claim about the language of first-order predicate logic. This logic has, according to him, become a language that seduces analytic metaphysicians to subscribe to false ontological positions. He refers to this fact as ‘fantology’, because of the symbol ‘Fa’, in which predication is always predication of a particular-as-particular.

This being so, one has to ask: what is fantology? Barry Smith, who coined the term, starts his paper “Against Fantology” by introducing it with this paragraph:

  A dark force haunts much of what is most admirable in the philosophy of the last one hundred years. It consists, briefly put, in the doctrine to the effect that one can arrive at a correct ontology by paying attention to certain superficial (syntactic) features of first-order predicate logic as conceived by Frege and Russell. Our approach allows us at the same time to simulate some of the advantages of second-order logic – above all in that we can quantify over universals – without the disadvantage in the form of the paradoxes which second-order logic is sometimes held to bring in its wake. Our use of names for universals implies also that our framework lends no support to the temptations of nominalism. We are protected from the consequences of fantology above all, however, because our procedure keeps the logical and ontological parts of our language rigorously separate.
