Moppe forest LOD: applied conclusions from the vegetation shelf
Applied reading, Aug 2026: the mesh-shader forest now has hero bough assemblies (trunk + 9 whorls x 7 boughs of needle tufts, no shells) chosen per projected size, with a per-tree object threadgroup. Play sessions show the shelf’s central warning live: hard construction swaps between tiers read as trees transforming, and a zero-pixel fallback culled the very nearest organisms (now fixed: unprojectable endpoints classify as full assemblies). Next steps taken from the shelf: make the mid tier the same bough skeleton at lower organ count so transitions become continuous density dissolves in the spirit of Kuth 2025 (shrink organs by projected size, stable hash order, survivors widen to hold coverage); then a depth-bearing canopy impostor for the middle band; far field per Bruneton 2012’s decomposition (canopy volume, view-light correlation, ground shadow, silverlining), with Decaudin-Neyret’s reminder that a distant forest is a volume with parallax.
